1958 Volkswagen Karmann Cabriolet | Factory RHD | Rhodesian Delivery | VW Nationals WinnerA truly special Volkswagen Karmann Cabriolet with extraordinary rarity, presentation and history.
Built in 1958 by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, this factory right-hand drive Cabriolet is understood to be one of only 219 RHD examples produced that year for export markets including the United Kingdom and South Africa.
This particular car is understood to have been delivered new to Rhodesia, with supplied history noting a long-held belief that it may have been connected to the Governor-General of Rhodesia.
The car was later discovered in South Africa after many years in dry storage. Importantly, the body was described as remarkably rust-free, having been preserved by the dry highland climate.
The supplied history also notes that, through the Australian Vintage VW Club, the owner was advised this may be the only genuine 1958 Karmann Cabriolet in Australia. This was later supported by a formal valuation from Bob Burrows of Resto Haus in Devon, UK, a respected authority on vintage Volkswagens.
In 2026, the car was awarded first prize for Best Cabriolet at the VW Nationals in Sydney and recognised as one of the finest factory right-hand drive Karmann Cabriolets in Australia.
